Come the end of the year, Monday’s live launch of season two of The Gavin Crawford Show (Comedy Network, Wednesdays at 9:30 pm) will be hard to beat in terms of fun. The Rivoli show kicked off with MC Kristeen von Hagen’s A-list material — love the new necrophilia stuff, Kris — followed by a kickass improv set dominated by Doug Morency and Nick Johne. Best was Crawford (as librarian Velma Howard) and Marypat Farrell’s campy recreation of a scene from horror flick Carrie. “I’m not like other girls, Mama,” said Crawford, to screams of laughter. In the audience was SNL’s Horatio Sanz “just hangin’ out” and pleased to be getting more work on the show with Will Farrell away making a film.

Equity Showcase continues its mentorship program by again pairing Equity actors with George Brown Theatre’s graduating class. This year’s show is Jim Cartwright’s Road, a darkly funny, unvarnished look at life on a destitute northern English street. Among the pros are Araxi Arslanian, Deborah Hay and Christopher Morris, working with director Mark Wilson. 651 Dufferin. 416-533-9231.

Actor Martin Julien turns playwright with The Unanswered Question, a piece about bisexual composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. The title comes from a work by American composer Charles Ives, whom Bernstein championed. The play — featuring Steve Cumyn, Philippa Domville and Richard Greenblatt — gets a public reading Saturday (February 16) as part of Between Stages, a series at the Miles Nadal JCC (750 Spadina). 416-924-6211.
