Caught up with the closing performances by the graduating class at George Brown Theatre of George Farquhar’s comedy The Beaux’ Stratagem, directed by Jeannette Lambermont, and Sophie Treadwell’s expressionistic 20s tragedy Machinal, helmed by Todd Hammond. Some fine acting, and it’s great that others are recognizing the talent. Jonathan Geenen appears in Macbeth at Oakville’s Festival of Classics, while the always impressive Ben Clost plays Puck in Daryl Cloran’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Barrie. Sarah Wilson, the trapped wife in Machinal, joins the Soulpepper troupe.
yes yoko solo
To coincide with the AGO’s Yes Yoko Ono retrospective, Jean Yoon wowed two crowds last Saturday with a deliciously theatrical and playful solo adaptation of her large-scale work The Yoko Ono Project.
Yoon and director Marion de Vries cleverly deconstructed Ono’s conceptual art and its personal, cultural and aesthetic after-effects. Adjusting her voice and energy for the work’s moods and colours, Yoon became an Asian Alice in Wonderland, capturing Ono’s enigmatic power, especially in a disturbing recreation of Ono’s Cut Piece, where audience members cut away her clothing.
