Director Brenley Charkow elegantly dramatizes the lives of six friends in this adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel.
Shaw regular Andrew Bunker vividly guides us through the memory-driven narrative as Bernard, standing alone with pencil in hand and conjuring up the petty jealousies and affections between his childhood friends, each with his or her own quiet longings.
Charkow’s graceful staging and text evoke Woolf’s free indirect narration, with innovative mise-en-scène suggesting train rides, a chapel and rippling waves. When the friends finally speak directly to one other during a dinner party, the collective, aching intimacy within the group is palpable.
A pitch-perfect cast and Emilio Guim’s sound design round out this outstanding Fringe find.
