Shaun Majumder cracking BP jokes, Ron Sexsmith surprising set, and Bruce Cockburn accepting an Earth Day award
Roughly an hour before Bruce Cockburn was to receive an Outstanding Commitment to the Environment Award from Earth Day Canada, the humble musical legend was in a corner taking in the scene on the rooftop Skyyard of the Drake Hotel.
I congratulated him on his award, and in our brief exchange he looked around and back at me noting the scene was not wholly representative of the work Earth Day does.
Around us hoards of well-heeled folks sipped cocktails and chatted about the Michael Stadtländer piglets being served up downstairs. A cynic’s perception would be one of watching an eco-trend hunting Bourgeoisie playground. Indeed, one lady next to me leaned over to a friend, asking “Did you drive your Smart Car?” only to be told you’d have to be crazy to drive one of those down the 401.
The truth is, however, that we’re at a fundraiser – one that arms a great org with the funds it needs to be the catalyst for change along, say, dirty waterways, or in our schools showing our schoolchildren the right direction to steer our hobbled planet.
Within that context, here’s a video of some of the event’s highlights, like Shaun Majumder cracking BP jokes, Ron Sexsmith surprising guests by joining Blackie and the Rodeo Kings for a song and Cockburn, who performs at Massey Hall June 16 as part of Luminato, giving an inspiring award acceptance speech.[rssbreak]
