Canada’s future lies in the hands of its youth. As part of Elevate, a Toronto-wide tech and innovation festival, Elevate Next Gen will bring together up-and-coming global tech leaders on September 26, 2018 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.
We’re profiling some of these young Canadians who are undertaking incredible projects in AI, quantum computing, blockchain development and nanotechnology.
What is your work about and how did you become interested in pursuing it?
I am currently working on disrupting the gene sequencing industry leveraging nanotechnology. I started working on it with my co-founder, Ayaan, when we both realized the potential of nanotechnology and how it can impact the way we gain genetic data today. After more research we realized that current methods for gaining genetic data was not done as efficiently as it should be. Therefore, we decided to work together to solve this problem.
The future of innovation is right here. What’s one thing that seems futuristic to Canadians right now, but will be common place in the next five years?
I think that really innovative treatments for diseases and health issues are sort of sci-fi right now, however, I see things like nanorobots for cancer treatment and other innovative solutions, part of our lives in the next five to 10 years.
If you could program machines to have one human-like quality, what would it be and why?
I think in order to really unlock the potential of machines, programming ‘consciousness’ would be crucial, having machines be able to think and make decisions for themselves would unlock a whole other realm of possibility!
How do you think artificial intelligence) could change how Canadians live?
I think that AI would not only change how Canadians live but how everyone lives. It will be implemented in majority of industries and jobs and will have a huge affect on how we do things in the future.
Can you tell us about an up-and-coming concept in technology readers might not know about?
Nanotechnology is definitely an underrated technology that has incredible potential. Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale. A really cool concept within nanotechnology is the nano-structures, these structures are 10 times stronger and have higher conductivity than current materials which allows for various potential especially with certain materials like graphene.
How would you like to put your emerging technology skills to use to help change the world?
I am going to apply my skill set to impact the world in the healthcare space and dramatically improve the way we treat diseases and cancer.
What’s your favourite sci-fi movie?
Personally, I’m an Inception fan.
