Artist Talk & Workshop with Audra Townsend

August 24, 2024 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Join us at BAND Gallery on Saturday August 24th from 2 – 4pm for an Artist Talk and Workshop with Audra Townsend and curator Karen Carter.

The task of researching family histories for many diaspora peoples is often a complex process, one that rarely relies on western public records and archives. The fractures in migratory patterns across oceans and seas that connect the threads of African Diasporic peoples, racialized as Black in the Americas, follow very specific patterns. These patterns reveal how human conflicts and cultural collisions have shaped the mapping of Caribbean cultures in both fascinating and challenging ways.

The body of work featured in Seekers and Imprints centers viewers in one or more of the 26 islands across the Caribbean Sea and reminds them that each story is more than the sum of its parts. Integrating personal artifacts and historical letters, Townsend’s work not only maps geographic spaces but also traces the emotional and historical journeys that shape the Caribbean diaspora.

Prompted by “Seekers and Imprints”, We invite you to participate in a creative response workshop exploring the emotional and physical landscapes of our journeys. The interactive session will be a space to create and reflect on familial storytelling through generations of peoples in the Diaspora.

Come ready to write, collage or draw!
