SUMMARY:Ethiopian Injera by Asmait Merhatsion
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has enjoyed a meal at an Ethiopian or Eritrean restaurant knows that soft\, springy injera\, a fermented sourdough flatbread\, is the centre of the meal. Injera is made with teff\, a tiny\, highly nutritious and gluten-free grain that flourishes in the highlands of Ethiopia. More than just a bread\, injera is also an eating utensil; in Eritrean and Ethiopian cuisine it is used to scoop up the meat and vegetable stews it is served with. A large round injera lines the tray on which the stews are served\, soaking up their juices as the meal progresses. When this edible tablecloth is eaten\, the meal is officially over\, but leftover injera is often incorporated into a variety of breakfast dishes. A versatile grain\, it is also used in baking\, porridges\, and also to brew beer and other beverages. \nIn this fun\, hands-on workshop Asmait Merhatsion will introduce participants to the process of making injera from scratch\, starting with preparing the batter using a special sourdough starter to start the fermentation that gives it its airy\, bubbly texture\, and slightly tangy taste. Everyone will get a chance to make their own injera to take home on the mogogo\, a traditional round griddle. Participants will also learn how to make shiro\, a thick paste of chickpea flour cooked with a blend of spices\, ginger\, garlic\, onion\, and tomato. A light meal will be served with fresh injera along with shiro and another vegetarian stew for everyone to share. We will wrap up the class with a traditional Ethiopian coffee and a tasty teff cookie. Participants will leave with a small package of teff and sourdough starter to take home\, as well as an opportunity to purchase additional homemade Eritrean products prepare by the chef.—– \nAsmait Merhatsion was born in Eritrea\, and moved to Canada with her family from Israel in 2022. She started to cook at home at a young age as was typical for girls in her community. When she lived in Israel\, a friend invited Asmait to start teaching cooking workshops with her. From then on she began to work with people from all over the world\, making dishes together every weekend as an extra income source for her family. Following her death\, the rallying cry “Woman\, Life\, Freedom” became the defining slogan of an historic uprising. The demand for gender equality\, the abolition of the compulsory hijab and fundamental human rights did not begin with Amini’s death; Iran’s feminist movement has a long and deep-rooted history. This timely film traces it from the 1960s to the present day through several widely respected Iranian feminist icons\, including former Minister of Women’s Affairs Mahnaz Afkhami\, internationally acclaimed Iranian actor Golshifteh Farahani\, and author and activist Masih Alinejad. A War on Women reveals how Iran’s long fight for equality has often been answered with harsh repression\, and yet it has nevertheless gathered force to become a movement that is not only challenging a regime but resonating far beyond the country’s borders. DESCRIPTION:April may have just started\, but it’s not too early to get excited about The Next Toronto Comic Jam! Always held on the last Sunday of the month\, this month’s Jam will be on April 26th\, 7:00pm at the Cameron House as usual (408 Queen Street West). \nEnjoy the lovely Toronto April weather by by hanging out in the back of a bar and drawing some collaborative comics with other local artist. It doesn’t matter what your drawing skills are like\, just so long as you’re willing to have fun. \nAs always\, we’ll provide the paper and you can bring your favourite pencils\, pens and erasers (we even have some art supplies for use here). You can then start drawing a comic and let everyone else add to it. Or you can add to other people’s comics. Or you can do neither and just sit back\, listen to music and hangout with people who like comics. \nThis is a FREE event ! Tickets are on sale now. \n \nOver the span of 50 years\, Judas Priest pioneered and continues to define the heavy metal genre\, releasing 19 studio albums and performing in sold-out arenas for one of the most dedicated band fan bases. A group of English blokes coming from working-class Birmingham\, the band’s blistering message of rebellion resonated and popularity soared—but so did the voices of detractors\, who falsely accused them of breaking the law and of embedding subliminal messages in their music amid the Satanic panic of the 1980s. Band members are keen to delve into their past\, sharing previously unreleased material from their personal archives\, but it’s frontman Rob Halford’s story of coming out on MTV and being met with acceptance that really showcases the inclusive spirit of metal. Co-director Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine gives the band their flowers in a film featuring rock royalty like Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters\, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett\, Run-DMC’s Darryl McDaniels\, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and the late great Ozzy Osbourne.
