SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: James McNeill Whistler
DESCRIPTION:“An artist is not paid for his labour but for his vision.” – James McNeil Whistler \nIn an era of great change and great beauty emerged the character of James McNeill Whistler. Considered by some to be one of the great innovators of 19th century art\, he was a contemporary of the Impressionists\, much admired by Van Gogh and Manet. Boldly experimental and famously witty\, Whistler disrupted the strict conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty\, creating “art for art’s sake” and earning himself a place in the history of great art. He found a parallel between painting and music\, and entitled many of his paintings “arrangements”\, “harmonies” and “nocturnes”\, emphasizing the importance of tonal harmony in his work. \nHis most famous painting\, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871)\, commonly known as Whistler’s Mother\, is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood. It is arguably one of the most famous paintings in history and this film will unveil the artist behind the art. \nTate Britain is now holding the first major retrospective of Whistler in three decades. This blockbuster exhibition promises to reawaken the world to just how important Whistler is to art history\, uniting world-famous masterpieces with rarely seen works. Exhibition on Screen will bring these stunning works and the incredible story behind them to cinemas around the world while the exhibition is still running\, bringing this truly global artist to a global audience. This will be an unmissable chance to get to know this visually spectacular artist and the influence he has had on those who followed. | \nMade in close collaboration with Tate Britain. \n \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, $5 \n*Please note\, free member tickets are not available for this film.

SUMMARY:Sans Soleil
DESCRIPTION:Part travelogue\, part essay\, part epistolary reverie\, this endlessly seductive magnum opus from the late French polymath Chris Marker eludes categorization. An unseen\, unnamed narrator comments on or reads from letters written by a vagabond cameraman named Sandor Krasna over a beguilingly digressive stream of images captured in Iceland\, Japan\, Cabo Verde\, Guinea-Bissau\, Île-de-France\, and San Francisco. Associative and lyrical\, playful and meditative\, Sans Soleil circles themes of memory and history\, time and its ceaselessness. There are continual leaps in editing\, sudden freeze-frames\, and the fleeting\, rebellious thrill that arises when a subject looks directly at the camera. A quintessential example of the fusion of documentary and invention\, it’s a film for those who long to wander with insatiable curiosity\, who are fascinated by the sacred-exotic\, who want to remember everything\, even though they know perfectly well that memory’s really just the lining of forgetting. – José Teodoro \nIn French\, Japanese\, English\, Cantonese\, Japanese sign language\, with English subtitles. \nIntroduced by author\, critic\, and curator José Teodoro and followed by an informal conversation. \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE

SUMMARY:Autumn in Greece with Peter Minaki
DESCRIPTION:Passionate Greek food aficionado\, cook\, author and teacher Peter Minaki of Kalofagas.ca is back at The Dep with another night of authentic Greek specialities. In keeping with his Mediterranean Diet philosophy\, Peter brings the bounty of the season to the table with this luscious celebration of home-style Greek cooking.—– \nHousemade Bread & Olives \nShrimp SaganakiShrimp simmered in an aromatic tomato sauce with crumbled feta — saganaki refers to the two-handled vessel the dish is traditionally served in\, not just the cheese it’s often associated with. \nBaby Arugula Salad with Fresh FigsA celebration of the close of the fig season; figs\, shaved graviera (think Greek gruyère) and a bright\, three-citrus dressing. \nMoussakaMoussaka is one of the most famous and beloved Greek dishes worldwide: tender eggplant layered with a warmly spiced minced meat sauce\, topped with a creamy béchamel. While viewed as a Greek national icon today\, its roots stretch back to medieval Arab dishes — Its name comes from the Arabic word musaqqa’a\, meaning “moistened” — which evolved through the Ottoman Empire. (It is said Ottoman chefs prepared over 40 different eggplant recipes for the royal court). In the 1920s\, influential Greek chef Nikolaos Tselementes added a French béchamel sauce to the top\, part of a trend to Europeanize” traditional Greek cooking by blending Mediterranean ingredients with French culinary techniques. This structured\, layered version with golden baked béchamel on top became the worldwide standard for Greek moussaka. You can rest assured Peter’s version will be exceptional. Vegetarian version available on request \nKarydopita à la ModeSpiced walnut cake\, warmed with cinnamon and clove and soaked in syrup\, made in patisseries across Greece and in most Greek homes — served with a scoop of ice cream.—– \nPeter Minaki is a proud Greek Canadian and the creator of the popular Kalofagas – Greek Food & Beyond food blog. Kalofagas is the Greek word for “gourmet.” Peter started the blog because he wanted to introduce the world to the delicious depths of Greek cuisine. Known for adding twists to his recipes\, Peter balances his posts between traditional\, modernized and his own unique recipes. Gathering inspiration from his yearly trips to Greece\, Peter endlessly promotes the diversity of Greek cuisine. Living in Toronto and having a curious spirit\, he refers to himself as “a tourist in his own town.” He welcomes every opportunity to try new foods and different cuisines.@kalofagas | kalofagas.ca \n—–BOOK NOW! $79 + HST – https://thedepanneur.ca/products/supper-club-autumn-in-greece-a-harvest-feast-with-peter-minaki—– \nEvery weekend The Depanneur invites an amateur or professional guest chef to host a fun\, informal dinner party.
