by Tennessee Williams. (Soulpepper Theatre). A delusional Southern belle moves in with her sister and her brutal husband. Previews from Sep 21, opens Sep 27 and runs to Oct 27, see website for schedule. $38-$98.
Artistic director Weyni Mengeshas production of the Williams classic is a revelation, with the design especially the sound and music evoking the New Orleans setting for this tale of fading Southern belle Blanche DuBoiss (Amy Rutherford) tragic visit to her sisters cramped apartment. Mengeshas handling of the contrasts between poetry and realism is effective without seeming overdone. And the performances are clear, focused and frequently heartbreaking. One of the best shows of the year.
