by Daniel David Moses (Soulpepper Theatre). Drama based on a true story about a Cree man on the run from the RCMP in 1800s Canada. Previews from Oct 11, opens Oct 17 and runs to Nov 10, see website for times. $38-$98.
Soulpepper offers a stirring version of Mosess two-hander that reimagines the story of Cree warrior Almighty Voice (James Dallas Smith), the subject of a two-year police manhunt culminating in his death in 1897. Jani Lauzons direction effectively balances the romance between Almighty Voice and his wife, White Girl (Michaela Washburn) in the first half, and the jarring, macabre Vaudeville scene between an Indigenous ghost and a Mountie in the second, inviting viewers to question representations of Indigeneity, both then and now.
