Annie Leibovitz: Life Through A Lens (Mongrel, 2007) D: Barbara Leibovitz. Rating: NNN DVD package: NNN
Annie Leibovitz took the famous pregnant nude Demi Moore shot and the one, taken just hours before his death, of a naked John Lennon wrapped around Yoko Ono. Leibovitz started with Rolling Stone, moved to Vanity Fair, then to Vogue. Along the way, she became one of the world’s great photographers.
Director Barbara Leibovitz (Annie’s sister) provides lots of archival footage from Rolling Stone’s offices in the 60s, Vogue photo shoots and Leibovitz home movies. Together with the talking heads that make up the extensive extras, they draw a portrait of a woman so fascinated with her work that she almost forgot to have a life.
The film touches on her friendship with acclaimed intellectual Susan Sontag, but offers few details.
