While listening to the hiphop joints Atmosphere recorded for the punk powerhouse Epitaph, I couldn’t help recalling MC Slug’s dismissive laughter when I asked the staunchly independent rapper what it would take for his Midwestern backpack hiphop crew to be co-opted by corporate interests. Evidently, a major indie just had to pop the question. Only Seven’s Travels – with Seven being Slug’s alter-ego, to set up the inevitable Seven solo spinoff loaded with guest celebrity collabos – doesn’t revel in the usual teary introspection that Slug uses to endear himself to Atmosphere’s large female following. This was made to hit like conventional softcore hiphop – simple shout-along choruses and basic head-nodding beats from Mr. Dibbs, with novelty hooks included. Who needs another Dilated Peoples?
