by Erin Shields (Factory Theatre). Women and their sexual fantasies take centre stage and the men are hunted, victimized and objectified in this satire. Previews from May 4, opens May 9 and runs to May 26, Tue-Sat 8 pm, Sun 2 pm. $20-$50.
MINI REVIEW
This sharp satire skewers the tropes of female characters in film and TV. As three friends (Ashley Botting, Mayko Nguyen and Sofia Rodriguez) discuss a cop drama about a female detective investigating a psychopath murdering angelic men, its clear Shields has flipped the script. The way we talk about and portray gender in pop culture is reversed. As the women chat, an attractive man (Jesse LaVercombe) poses in an illuminated box like an object on display. Beautiful Man was written before the rise of the #MeToo movement, so its remarkable and equally troubling how years later, the issues it tackles feel just as resonant and even more urgent.
