Black Mountain

In Vancouver, overlooked artists don’t put down their instruments and start bagging groceries they join other outsiders in supergroups like Black Mountain. It’s the latest rockin’ ruse of Jerk With a Bomb’s Stephen McBean, who cleverly chose a name that’d allow him to recycle the artwork from his Pink Mountaintops project. Black Mountain’s self-titled debut sounds like the sort of record the New Pornographers might’ve made had they been listening to the Velvets, Can and Sabbath instead of Carl Newman’s musings on why Zumpano’s Goin’ Through Changes is a forgotten masterpiece. Most remarkable of all is that McBean was able to put this together with members of the Black Halos, Sinoia Caves and Dream on Dreary. Ace.

Black Mountain join Crystal Skulls at the 360 Tuesday (April 5).
