BORIS

Rating: NNNN

For a minute there, I thought the wrong disc was playing. All the echo-y guitar plink and dubby drumming didn’t sound like the bruising Boris I know, but soon enough the distorted thrashing started up, followed by the wild-ass pounding and searing blasts of fuzz, which inspired a big sigh of relief. Once you get past the placid bit at the beginning, it’s straight into the relentlessly pummelling assault we’ve come to love and expect from the mighty Japanese trio, and Pink’s wallop-per-second rate puts it in a class with Heavy Rocks at the top of the Boris heap. So if you feel the Melvins are too sludgy, Wolfmother too hammy-jammy and Mastodon too quiet, Pink may be the colour of your new favourite rock ‘n’ roll noise.
