Remember the gold and cash heist at Toronto Pearson Airport earlier this year? Well, American transport company Brink’s has filed a lawsuit against Air Canada in relation to the event, Reuters reports.

Brink’s has reportedly accused the Canadian airline of “negligence and carelessness” regarding the April 2023 heist where thieves got away with about 400 kilograms of gold and $1.95 million USD cash.

According to reports, Brink’s is accusing Air Canada of letting an unidentified person into a cargo facility at Pearson and releasing the gold and cash to them after being given fake documentation.

The security company alleges that Air Canada failed to secure reasonable and appropriate security measures and protocols in order to ensure the gold and cash were not stolen, according to a statement of claim that was filed on Oct. 6.

The lawsuit reportedly claims that Brink’s was responsible for transporting the money and gold from Zurich, Switzerland to Toronto after being hired to do so by Raiffeisen Schweiz, a Switzerland-based bank, and Valcambi, a Swiss company that refines precious metals.

The lawsuit claims that police are investigating the situation, but have not made any arrests or convictions in relation to the heist, Reuters says. Additionally, the stolen shipments have not been recovered.

Brink’s is claiming that Air Canada is responsible for the entire value of the stolen items, which are valued at around $17 million USD, according to reports.
