Indie rock pioneers Built to Spill are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their beloved album Keep It Like A Secret with a huge tour across North America, including a stop at the Phoenix in September.
The Boise, Idaho band’s fourth release was part of a multi-album deal with Warner Bros. during a time in the mid-90s when the majors were busy scooping up underground bands in the hopes of finding the next Nirvana. It’s a gorgeous collection of symphonic pop songs fastened together by lead singer Doug Martsch’s introspective lyrics and deliriously catchy guitar riffs.
Built to Spill are no stranger to anniversary shows. In 2008, they painstakingly recreated 1997’s Perfect From Now On live using all the original members. This time, the only OG member is Martsch, so don’t expect a carbon copy of Keep It Like A Secret.
Even if modern day indie rock is purportedly dead, at least we still have Built to Spill’s long-winded guitar breakdowns to revel in.
