Carlos Del Junco

Rating: NNN

Apparently, Carlos del Junco is the master of a rare “overblow” technique on a special 10-hole diatonic harmonica. While that might be titillating news for trainspotting blues buffs, casual fans take notice: this cat can really throw down on the mouth harp. Over 12 stompin’ tracks of boogie-down blues, del Junco and guests like (Norah Jones guitarist) Kevin Breit go downtown big time, displaying more chops than a butcher’s shop. No one-trick ponies, they also dip into del Junco’s Cuban roots on the sexy Let’s Mambo and shuffle like hell on the rollicking Run Me Down. I bet this stuff really cooks live.

Carlos del Junco launches his CD at Hugh’s Room Saturday (February 19).
