SUMMARY:Tanya Marcuse: Portent
DESCRIPTION:Tanya Marcuse’s multichannel video Portent presents ominous scenes of the natural world—trees swaying in the wind\, vapour rising from volcanic fumaroles\, icy branches illuminated by flickering light\, and other small disturbances that hint at forces beyond our understanding. The quiet is deliberate; the frame remains fixed while the environment shifts restlessly within it\, evoking a tension between stillness and motion\, beauty and unease\, the known and unknown. \nMarcuse describes her work as an exploration of the kinship between disaster and the sublime\, and of the ways the world around us is continually threatened\, transformed\, and made strange. Portent forms part of her expansive series Book of Miracles (2020–26)\, inspired by the Augsburger Wunderzeichenbuch\, a 16th-century illuminated manuscript depicting natural disasters\, supernatural phenomena\, celestial spectacles\, and unexplained oddities. Like the fantastic visions of the original\, Portent’s tableaux slip toward the uncanny\, suggesting an anxious molting of nature—the instability of change into a new and unknowable state of being. \nCreated against our present-day backdrop of extreme weather\, political upheaval\, and the lingering disorientation of the pandemic\, Portent channels a heightened awareness of our entanglement with a rapidly changing planet. In the delicate tremor of leaves and grasses\, Marcuse conveys a sense of awe shot through with foreboding—a recognition that the fragile systems sustaining us are as uncertain as they are wondrous. \nhttps://theimagecentre.ca/exhibition/tanya-marcuse-portent/

SUMMARY:Madison Chow: Overflow
DESCRIPTION:The water has a body\, and so do I. A body as old as time itself\, one that has ebbed and flowed for longer than I can comprehend. Yet within the tradition of photography\, we have often constrained bodies of water and other natural elements to romantic fragments within their time. We halt them within the photographic moment\, failing to recognize water for its ephemeral and animate nature\, one that requires our dedication and time to understand. \nOverflow seeks to recognize picture as privilege by inviting water to be a collaborator in the photographic process. By using a camera-less medium\, the traditional colonial gaze of the lens is removed from the creation of the image\, allowing the water to take a leading role in its own imaging. To create these images\, I met the water at the shoreline\, often in the quiet of morning\, and arranged a composition that included nearby flora\, natural objects from along the shore\, or my own body. As the water rushed to meet the paper it slowly carved its features into the material\, aided by both natural and artificial UV light. Guided by intuition\, what emerged were vibrant self-portraits of one of Earth’s most dynamic elements\, existing as both abstract documentation of an uncontrollable force and a tangible record of the strong connection between myself and these bodies of water that have been forged over time. Made on visits to both freshwater and saltwater bodies\, Overflow exists as part of a personal pursuit to image the natural world in a truthful\, respectful\, and reciprocal manner\, placing importance on learning to revere the oceans and lakes that surround us. \n– Madison Chow \nhttps://theimagecentre.ca/exhibition/madison-chow-overflow/

SUMMARY:Rouzbeh Akhbari: Of Wool and Diesel
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception: Friday\, 2 October 2026\, 7–10PM \nRouzbeh Akhbari is an artist\, filmmaker\, and geographer based in Toronto and Lisbon. Working across film and installation\, his practice investigates the political and ecological entanglements of trade\, infrastructure\, and human geography. \nIn 2024\, Mercer Union invited the artist to develop a new film installation for his first institutional solo exhibition in Canada. Titled Of Wool and Diesel (2026)\, the work follows the smuggling of sheep by speedboat within the Strait of Hormuz and considers the act as part of an essential transcontinental supply chain\, a network of informal trade\, and a history of lawless seas with ties to 17th-century Portugal. \nOf Wool and Diesel is the culmination of Akhbari’s research and fieldwork over the last five years\, developed alongside the artist’s debut documentary feature\, Crossings: Kaleh Ziyarat (2026)\, a counterpoint to the exhibition. \nMercer Union’s collaboration with Akhbari emerges from our long-held commitment to commissioning new work and creating milestone opportunities for artists to bring their visions to fruition in Toronto.

SUMMARY:You Had to Be There: TO Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Nick Davis’ high-spirited documentary reveals how a humble Toronto run of the hippie musical Godspell became an historic incubator for modern comedy. \nOn June 1\, 1972\, a humble production of a hit musical retelling of the Book of Matthew officially opened its run at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in downtown Toronto. As for what happened next\, that may be most accurately expressed by the subtitle for Nick Davis’ celebratory documentary\, You Had to Be There: How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution\, Spread Love & Overalls\, and Created a Community That Changed the World (In a Canadian Kind of Way). \nAnd that’s no empty boast about a bunch of singing hippies. Based solely on the bright futures of so many of the talents who formed the cast during the 14-month run—Martin Short\, Eugene Levy\, Gilda Radner\, Victor Garber\, Andrea Martin\, Dave Thomas\, and Jayne Eastwood plus musical director Paul Shaffer—Godspell’s impact and influence cannot be overstated. The improvisational element of the musical itself helped foster a unique sensibility that comedy fans would soon recognize in Saturday Night Live\, SCTV\, and countless other TV shows and movies. \nAs Davis’ film reveals\, the Toronto Godspell was a hugely formative experience in the lives of the participants\, too. With its deft mix of engaging interviews with surviving participants\, animated recreations\, and other means of compensating for the scarcity of original archival materials (if only audience members had smartphones in 1972)\, You Had to Be There brings this special time back into the present with an irrepressible sense of joy. – Jason Anderson\, Toronto International Film Festival \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE

SUMMARY:The Theft
DESCRIPTION:The second feature documentary from Toronto-based Afghan-Canadian filmmaker Aisha Jamal (A Kandahar Away\, Hot Docs 2019 Official Selection)\, The Theft delves into the messy relationship between museums and conflict. Set against the backdrop of Afghanistan—a country whose rich cultural history has been repeatedly scarred by war and political upheaval—the film traces the journey of a set of 12th century marble panels\, looted throughout the decades from their place of origin in Ghazni\, Afghanistan. Many of these artifacts are now housed in major museums around the world. Their story becomes a lens through which the film asks pressing questions: Why do artifacts matter? What is lost when objects are removed from the cultures that gave them meaning? Should these panels now be returned to Afghanistan despite the current Taliban regime’s history of destruction? By weaving together the voices of curators\, social actors\, experts and artists across continents\, The Theft engages in an urgent and contemporary conversation around what the postcolonial museum might look like. \nIn English and Dari\, with English subtitles. \nJoin director Aisha Jamal for a special post-screening Q&A. \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE

SUMMARY:Vincent Price: What Keeps Us Alive - with Victoria Price
DESCRIPTION:This fully authorized documentary reveals far more than the man behind Hollywood’s master of the macabre. Through rare archival materials and intimate interviews with Price’s children\, Victoria Price and V.B. Price\, alongside cultural icons and admirers including John Waters\, Tim Burton\, Patton Oswalt\, Hank Azaria\, Bill Hader\, Cassandra Peterson\, and Alice Cooper\, the film uncovers the remarkable life behind one of the most recognizable voices and faces in popular culture. \nThe documentary traces a life of elegant contradictions: a classically trained actor who redefined screen villainy with charm and intelligence; an erudite art collector\, educator\, and gourmand who moved effortlessly between high culture and low-budget horror; and\, perhaps most surprisingly\, a warm and generous mentor figure whose influence extended far beyond the screen. Through his films\, television appearances\, cookbooks\, lectures\, and iconic voice work\, Price became an unlikely cultural touchstone for multiple generations. \nAt its emotional centre is the story of Price’s evolving identity\, shaped by the turbulence of Hollywood politics\, the complexities of family\, and a lifelong fascination with the psychology of villains. In later years\, Price spoke of villainy not as evil\, but as a mirror—an opportunity for audiences to confront their fears\, hypocrisies\, and hidden desires. The film explores how he transformed from a sophisticated screen antagonist into a beloved ambassador for curiosity\, creativity\, and individuality. \nMore than a portrait of a horror legend\, this is the story of an artist who defied categorization. Through the reflections of family members\, filmmakers\, comedians\, musicians\, and cultural commentators\, the documentary examines why Vincent Price continues to resonate decades after his death. What emerges is a richly human portrait of a man whose legacy endures not merely in screams and shadows\, but in the intelligence\, generosity\, wit\, and warmth that defined the man behind the mask. \nJoin Victoria Price for a special post-screening Q&A. \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE

SUMMARY:Black Zombie
DESCRIPTION:George A. Romero’s iconic Night of the Living Dead spearheaded an entire genre that has spawned hundreds of films and TV shows centred around flesh-eating monsters. Before their cinematic deviation\, the origins of the reanimated dead can be traced back to 17th-century colonial Caribbean sugarcane fields and are connected to Vodou\, a religion in which enslaved West Africans held the belief that death would free them to return to their homeland for their afterlife. If a landowner turned them into a zombie\, however\, their homeward passage would be interrupted and they would labour in plantations forevermore. Director Maya Annik Bedward explores the damaging ongoing appropriation of the undead figure in popular culture to unpack the mythology and reclaim the zombie’s power as a symbol of survival and resilience. Extensive visual research and interviews with filmmakers\, vodou practitioners and anthropologists juxtapose horror-film history with Haitian culture to create a pathway to understand the roots of the zombie in slavery and the spiritual significance of a lost body deprived of its soul. Alexander Rogalski\, Hot Docs \nIn English\, French and Haitian\, with English subtitles. \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE

SUMMARY:Frankenstein (1931)
DESCRIPTION:“Karloff gives one of the great performances of all time as the monster whose mutation from candour to chill savagery is mirrored only through his limpid eyes. The film’s great imaginative coup is to show the monster ‘growing up’ in all too human terms. First he is the innocent baby\, reaching up to grasp the sunlight that filters through the skylight. Then the joyous child\, playing at throwing flowers into the lake with a little girl whom he delightedly imagines to be another flower. And finally\, as he finds himself progressively misjudged by the society that created him\, the savage killer as whom he has been typecast. The film is unique in Whale’s work in that the horror is played absolutely straight\, and it has a weird fairytale beauty not matched until Cocteau made La Belle et la Bête.” – Time Out \nWant more chills and thrills? SUMMARY:Baby Doe
DESCRIPTION:Thirty years ago\, Gail Ritchey\, a young woman from a conservative Christian community in rural Ohio\, gave birth alone and left her newborn in the woods. Now a devoted mother of three\, her quiet suburban life is shattered when DNA evidence links her to the infamous cold case of “Geauga’s Child\,” leading to her arrest for murder. \nAuthorities dismiss her claim that the baby was stillborn\, and the media swiftly vilify her. \nFacing a possible life sentence\, Gail turns to her husband\, Mark\, and their adult children\, who struggle to reconcile the woman they love with the accusations against her. With her attorney\, Steven\, she must confront the weight of societal and religious pressures—and her own long-buried shame—to fight for her freedom. \nDirected by Jessica Earnshaw (Jacinta)\, Baby Doe cuts through the headlines to uncover the human complexity of Gail’s case. With a compassionate yet unflinching lens\, the film examines the intersection of women’s health\, justice\, and the societal forces that continue to shape stories like hers. \nJoin director Jessica Earnshaw for a special post-screening Q&A. \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE

SUMMARY:Begone Dull Care: The Films of Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart
DESCRIPTION:Canadian animation pioneers Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart transformed the landscape of Canadian filmmaking by treating animation as an art of movement\, sound and experimentation. Born in Scotland and based in Canada from the 1940s\, McLaren became one of the National Film Board of Canada’s most influential artists\, developing innovative techniques that included drawing and painting directly onto film\, creating animation without a camera\, and synchronizing hand-drawn images to the music of celebrated musicians like Glenn Gould\, Ravi Shankar\, and Oscar Peterson. His playful\, abstract films have won more than 200 awards including several Oscar® nominations and a win\, a Palme d’Or\, and inclusion in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register\, which lists the most significant documentary heritage collections. Lambart\, who worked closely with McLaren at the NFB\, was a trailblazing animator in her own right\, having been crowned the ‘First Lady of Canadian Animation’. Her delicate cut-out animations took inspiration from landscapes and folklore combining meticulous craftsmanship with a distinctive poetic sensibility. Together\, McLaren and Lambart helped establish Canada as a major centre for experimental animation\, leaving a lasting influence on generations of filmmakers and animators. \n\nA Chairy Tale (Norman McLaren; Claude Jutra\, 1957\, 9 mins)\nSpheres (Norman McLaren; Rene Jodoin\, 1969\, 7 mins)\nO Canada (Evelyn Lambart\, 1952\, 2 mins)\nBegone Dull Care (Norman McLaren; Evelyn Lambart\, 1949\, 8 mins)\nMosaic (Norman McLaren; Evelyn Lambart\, 1965\, 5 mins)\nNeighbours (Norman McLaren\, 1952\, 8 mins)\nDots (Norman McLaren\, 1940\, 2 mins)\nBlinkity Blank (Norman McLaren\, 1955\, 5 mins)\nLe merle (Norman McLaren\, 1958\, 5 mins)\nMr. Frog Went A-Courting (Evelyn Lambart\, 1974\, 4 mins)\nPas de deux (Norman McLaren\, 1968\, 14 mins)\n\nFeaturing a recorded introduction by filmmaker and animator Matthew Rankin. \nTICKETS (+HST) \nGeneral: $15 \nMembers: $10\, $8\, FREE
