Chris Bailey, Nick Cave, June 22

Rating: NNNNN

When local country gag Cuff the Duke left the Kool Haus stage to negligable applause, most people expected that Nick Cave was the next person they’d see. But suddenly, Saints survivor Chris Bailey appeared, strapped with an acoustic guitar, and launched into a raucous take on Big Boy Cruddup ‘s That’s All Right Mama like he’d never heard of Elvis . His torrid rip through Ring Of Fire served as both a charming nod to the late, great June Carter Cash and a clever set-up for his own classic Just Like Fire Would. But as we surveyed the crowd, it appeared that we were the only ones singing along. Apparently, since the Oz punk icon was kind enough to duet with Nick on Bring It On from the fab new Nocturama (Anti/Epitaph) disc, Cave brought Bailey along for the tour.

“He just called me up one day and said, ‘I’ve written this song that sounds like something by the Saints. Would you care to come down and sing on it?'” recalls Bailey, sipping white wine backstage afterwards.

“We’ve talked about writing some songs together, so it’ll be interesting to see where that leads. In the meantime, though, I’m putting out a new solo album and a Saints record – although I doubt that either one will turn up in Canada.”
