City and Colour is the solo moniker of Dallas Green, otherwise known as the singer of St. Catharines heavy/soft emo outfit Alexisonfire, and Sometimes marks the release of a collection of gentle acoustic guitar ballads he’s been performing in opening slots for some time. Green’s simple songwriting is lovely, with austere guitar plucking and occasional piano plinking, and his tentative falsetto nicely complements the softness of the music. Unfortunately, his lyrics often get caught up in emo-standard clichés of the “your words pierce my soul” variety. What would make this record really stand out is plainspoken writing that relies less on metaphor and more on experience. Maybe that’ll come in time.
