What artist or album changed your life?

Reigning Sound’s Too Much Guitar really gave me a kick in the pants. That was a thrill, hearing a record that was new. I was like, ‘Yes, this is happening now!’ Most of the records I like are old.

What’s the best rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?

That I like chick bands.

Best high?

I had some highs while recording the album with Liam Watson at Toe Rag in London. A whole new world was unveiled to me, and I felt like a kid in a candy store. Terrible analogy, I know, but my eyes were like saucers for weeks.

What actor would you want to star in a film about your life?

Jeanne Moreau. Although I don’t think there’s much resemblance. Maybe Giulietta Masina? Or maybe some other French actor from the 50s with one of those great faces that shows deep whimsy, sadness, cunning, humour and pain.

If youd never started playing music, how would you be making a living today?

I’d be living in the woods of western North Carolina, working with my hands, building, sculpting and painting. I’d be a hermit, I’d scowl a lot, grow a long beard and shake my walking stick at children.
