Dark For Dark – Warboats

Rating: NNN

Haligonian group Dark for Dark have released a gentle, summery debut. The recently formed indie folk trio’s unusual, organic-sounding vocal harmonies owe as much to Jess Lewis and Melanie Stone as to lead singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rebecca Zolkower (tenor guitar, acoustic guitar and drums).

Whether she’s singing about planting a garden on her childhood street, heavy stuff like death or exuberantly anticipating a new baby, Zolkower’s voice has a certain naive quality that lends the music a quirky, comforting and nostalgic vibe.

The songs are elevated by sparse orchestral arrangements that dreamily mix French horn, mellotron, lap steel and piano as well as mandolin, ukulele and banjo. The few more uptempo songs (Sweetwater and Little Birds) suggest poppier possibilities for the band, but Dark for Dark are at their best slow and steady, as on the confident standout title track.
