Best known as a kick-ass East Indian rhythm outfit, the Toronto Tabla Ensemble has always included collaboration and innovation as part of its mandate. Over the past decade, founder Ritesh Das has pounded his tabla with world music composer Donald Quan, taiko drummer Gary Kiyoshi Nagata and dancers like flamenco queen Esmeralda Enrique and kathak ace Joanna Das. The troupe marks its 10-year anniversary this weekend with Quan, bassist Ian de Souza and two world-premiere dances by Das, who’s also a member of the musical ensemble. Could be their last local appearance for a while. After this, East meets West as the troupe embarks on a western Canada tour. See listings, this page, for details.
