DAYNA MANNING

DAYNA MANNING Shades(Nettwerk) Rating: NN Rating: NN

Apparently, Stratford-born Dayna Manning had an album out five years ago, but somehow I managed to miss it and her entirely. Listening to Shades, I can see how she slipped under my radar. Manning’s voice is pretty, mellow and inoffensive, if a little nasal, and her songwriting competent if unexciting. A nice mixture of folk rock lite that varies in structure, though not in mood or tempo, Shades is so slickly produced that it sounds canned, which detracts from the mood of this sort of music. It just feels like it should be rawer and sparer. It could benefit by replacing a few of the instruments here with some personality.
