Delta Spirit

Rating: NNN

San Diego’s Delta Spirit return with a solid sophomore album of earthy roots folk that shouldn’t disappoint those impressed by their promise-filled debut. The tunes are built around the expressive drawl of lead singer Matthew Vasquez, but sophisticated full-band arrangements and crisp production (courtesy of My Morning Jacket keyboardist Bo Koster and Eli Thomson) elevate them above run-of-the-mill singer/songwriter fare.

Bits of texture like the gospel-influenced backing vocals on Ransom Man and propulsive drums on White Table suggest that the tracks, despite being written in hotel rooms across America, have been carefully crafted, though the lyrics occasionally rely on Americana clichés. All in all, it’s solid growth from a band with a considerable amount of potential still to be realized.

Top track: White Table

Delta Spirit play the Mod Club Saturday (June 26).
