Director X and LeSean Harris are sharing memories of going to the movies

Director X considers what aliens would think if they ever observed human behaviour… when we go to the movies. “They like to get together in big groups and then look at a thing,” says X, imitating the hypothetical aliens as they ponder people. “They just keep doing it: Just focusing on one thing together.”

Director X is speaking on the NOW What podcast, alongside his collaborator LeSean Harris, discussing what it is that keeps people going to the movies. “People just like being together,” he says, in between reminiscences of the laughs he shared with crowds at Wedding Crashers. “That’s just how people are. Movies provide that experience in a really special kind of way because it’s also taking you away.”

The movie theatre experience is under threat. Competition from streaming is fierce. The pandemic dealt a deadly blow to attendance. With that in mind, X and Harris are trying to remind people why we love going to the theatres to begin with.

They’re teaming up with Telefilm Canada on a #MovieMemory campaign. Canadians were asked to submit their favourite movie memories for consideration. X alongside Harris will use those memories for a national commercial celebrating the theatrical experience. It makes for a neat little feedback loop: Movies make memories and those memories end up back on screen.

They discussed the campaign on the NOW What podcast, as well as their own movie memories, what inspired them to pursue filmmaking and be among the few Black men directing in Canada.

Director X has been keeping busy lately with new music videos for Drake, Future and Black Eyed Peas. He also just went into production on a modern-day Robyn Hood series, which is always timely but feels especially so while Toronto is pricing out the working class and inflation has families struggling to afford groceries.
