Album reviews Music

Dresden Dolls

Rating: NNN

This Boston duo’s debut is a fully realized slice of weird indie-rock cabaret, and there’s something undeniably well crafted and appealing about it. Perhaps it’s because it’s a ballsy thing to revive, but the 12 songs on the album are all recorded in an intimate but spare manner, and the many-hatted Amanda Palmer’s deep, irreverent and melodramatic vocals, coupled with her piano tinklings and Brian Viglione’s solid percussion, make for an altogether interesting sound that doesn’t seem far from what Nellie McKay occasionally aims for.
