Eagles of Death Metal

Rating: NNN

Jesse Hughes has always admitted how damn lucky he is to have been a childhood friend of Josh Homme.

Eagles of Death likely wouldn’t exist and Hughes would probably still be dropping acid somewhere in the California desert. But after listening to Heart On – the Eagles’ third effort – I’m starting to think Homme has become the lucky one. This is way more fun than anything Queens of the Stone Age have released in years.

Homme is freed from Queens fans’ expectations for heady rock and is able to indulge in the cliché rock ‘n’ roll basics that define Hughes, who, judging by bluesy rockers like How Can A Man With So Many Friends Feel So Alone, has been listening exclusively to early 70s Stones.

They’re no longer sending up rock with smirks they’re actually becoming establishment, and it suits them.

Eagles of Death Metal play the Mod Club November 13
