ELECTRIC WIZARD

Rating: NNNN

Aside from having what’s quite possibly one of the best band names ever, England’s Electric Wizard have slowly developed over the last decade into one of metal’s premier doom stoner bands, and Witchcult is just about a perfect example of why.

Sounding like Black Sabbath woozy on downers, the riffs are massive and sludgy, while the rhythms pound away into hypnotizing grooves. The subject matter is, unsurprisingly, occultish and over-the-top enough (HP Lovecraft references are always welcome) to add to the album’s allure. With tracks like Dunwich and Satanic Rites Of Drugula, the entire record reasserts just how well these guys can put together a song.

If your idea of a good time involves smoking a mountain of dope and listening to heavy albums, Witchcult should be mandatory.
