by Richard Strauss (Canadian Opera Company). A woman seeks to avenge her father’s murder at the hands of her mother and her mother’s lover. Sung in German with English surtitles. Opens Jan 26 and runs to Feb 22, see website for times. $35-$350.
Strausss one-act can be electric musical theatre, but some wattage is missing in this revival of the COCs two-decades old production. The voices are mostly excellent especially Christine Goerke, Erin Wall and Wilhelm Schwinghammer as three very different siblings but the middle of the opera loses intensity because of Susan Bullocks bland Klytamnestra. And the COC orchestra, under Johannes Debus, is better at bringing out the lyrical and noble moments of the score than they are in the big, dissonant passages.
