Fides Krucker

When vocal explorer Fides Krucker graced our eye-popping cover, she was emerging as one of opera’s most original singers, adding screeches and yowls to her lyrical tones. Talking to senior stage writer Jon Kaplan, she dismissed bel canto (literally, beautiful song) as the musical equivalent of Vogue. “It may look good, but it doesn’t teach anything” (page 37 of the issue). The multi-phonic mezzo is still going strong, opening Friday (September 14) in Julie Sits Waiting, a new electroacoustic opera. See a Q&A with Krucker.
