Gobsmacked!

Rating: NNNN

Gobsmacked! Studio Theatre, Harbourfront Centre, August 27 to 29 Rating: NNNN

A few times a year, the DIYers of this city emerge from their blurs of cutting, pasting, stitching and hand-processing to come together en masse and celebrate the fruits of their labours. Gobsmacked! is such a convergence, a harvest festival of indie culture, with crafts, music, comics, film, everything but the tilt-a-whirl, and it’s all free.

There are two reasons why everybody doesn’t make movies all day: time and money. Gobsmacked! presents best-of retrospectives from two festivals that render those obstacles null and void.

The On The Fly fest requires videomakers to shoot in a day and spend no more than $100 LIFT’s $99 No Excuses Film Festival poses similar restrictions. Both have inspired shorts by scads of local luminaries and first-timers, the cream of which are here for your delectation.

August 28 and 29 at the Studio Theatre, the LIFT fest presents, among others, Daniel Cockburn’s apocalyptic/conspiratorial manifesto Subterranea Gargantua (prelude), Larissa Fan’s sweet, slightly spooky film about flowers In the Garden and Michele Stanley’s striking animation Last Still Life.
