GRAILS

Rating: NNNN

The engineers of Doomsdayer’s Holiday – the latest from mostly instrumental psychedelic avant-metal band Grails – are know for their collaborations with Earth and Sunn0))), so it’s not surprising that this well-paced and varied disc almost completely eludes genre definitions by seamlessly incorporating a whole bunch of them.

While there are certainly some very heavy moments, experimental swirling and droning pops up again and again, bringing with it lush, beautiful sounds that wouldn’t seem out of place on a Pink Floyd record. At its most challenging, Holiday incorporates psychedelic Middle Eastern influences that grow into towering riffs – ideal for an album that is never content to remain stationary.
