Harmony Trowbridge

Rating: NNNN

The title of her debut EP may mean “afraid of love,” but Harmony Trowbridge has no fear when it comes to her musical direction. Not your average singer/songwriter, she’s much more of an avant-lyrical artist. Her voice is so distinct – almost valiant – that it almost doesn’t require the accompaniment of her subtle guitar plucks. Slightly reminiscent of Joanna Newsom’s quirkiness – though less shrill – and of a younger Joni Mitchell, Trowbridge is nonetheless an original. Her poetic, often spoken-word, beat-like musings are frank and moving, and she’s both delicate and fierce. She can floor you with her loveliness.

Harmony Trowbridge holds court at the Rivoli Wednesday (March 23).
