Buying art is a brilliant idea, and this is a terrific time of year to do it. For one thing, very cool sales are getting under way, and for another, a work of art is a genius gift ? it?s personal, you can put some dough in the pocket of a local creator and, in some cases, benefit truly worthy causes as well. Here are three great places to start.
Little art works for little money
The Little Art Show (www.littleartshow.com) squeezes 150 micro-canvases measuring 7 by 9 inches into the BMW showroom (11 Sunlight Park) on Saturday (November 18) to raise money for the Artists’ Network of Riverdale (www.artistsnetworkofriverdale.org). The event runs from 7 to 11 pm and admission is $20.
I didn’t do it
Gifters hunting for the perfect present for the creative type on their list should take a chance at OCAD’s (100 McCaul) annual Whodunit? Mystery Art Sale. Anonymous works, priced at $75, are on sale from November 21 to 25. You never know – your purchase could be worth a fortune in years to come. www.ocad.on.ca.

The St. Andrew’s Christmas Art Market injects holiday shopping with some Latvian flava on Friday and Saturday, December 1 and 2, at St. Andrew’s Latvian Church (383 Jarvis). Admission to browse a selection of knitwear, blown glass and food goodies is $2.
