Holly Cole’s sultry, sexy, smoky vox is back, this time with fellow Trio members Aaron Davis and David Piltch, along with a strong cast of characters to help with her concept album. The theme is summer, but Shade is no day at the beach. Forget about light, fluffy fare. Cole has carefully hand-picked each song, fleshing out tight yet swinging arrangements of Irving Berlin’s Heatwave, the Beach Boys’ God Only Knows and Cole Porter’s Too Darn Hot. Cole has always had great timing and a knack for selecting the right material, and Shade doesn’t disappoint. It’s as summery as a tourist sipping a daiquiri on Queen’s Quay.
