Hu Tsa Tsa

Rating: NNNN

This is a really nice album from Toronto-based Hu Tsa Tsa, a group that blends traditional klezmer with chamber music. Much of this is a calmer version of the klezmer you might be accustomed to – it’s Klezmer Tisch, or klezmer table music, as opposed to the klezmer dance music you may have heard at the odd Jewish wedding. The lovely arrangements can venture into complex experimentation. Traditional clarinet and violin are accompanied by cimbalon, mandocello and sometimes piano, creating a wide range of moods and textures and often a pervasive melancholy. Hu Tsa Tsa play tonight (Thursday, December 9) at the Robert Gill Theatre.
