James Bryan

Rating: NNNN

After co-founding the Philosopher Kings and Prozzäk as well as producing and writing songs for others, James Bryan was obviously going to produce a polished and well-constructed pop album. But I wasn’t expecting these complex and infectious songs – a melange that treats flamenco, disco, Brazilian beats and new wave as if they were always meant to rub up against one another in the same song. Bryan’s guitar work is exemplary, as is his keyboard prowess, but it’s his choice of singers that indicates he really knows what he’s doing. Both Renee Wynter and Alessa breathe sultry fire into the songs and allow Bryan to pull off a cover of Bizarre Love Triangle that doesn’t sound sappy.

James Bryan hits the Mod Club tonight (Thursday, May 12).
