This lecture, richly illustrated with historical sources, explores the enduring fascination of the ballroom as known to Jane Austen and her contemporaries. How did they find partners? How often did they dancein real life? Did everybody know how to dance? What did it mean toopen the ball? Are Jane Austen’s dance forms still done today? The lecture will be followed by Q&A, letter-writing with quill pens and sealing wax, then tea and delicious treats to conclude the afternoon.
