Soulpepper Theatre presents a play by Stephen Adly Guirgis. Two notorious men await trial for murder, only to discover justice and goodness where it is least expected. Previews from Jan 23, opens Jan 30 and runs to Feb 23, see website for schedule. $25-$98.
Deftly helmed by Soulpeppers artistic director Weyni Mengesha, this new production of Pulitzer Prize-winner Guirgiss intoxicatingly talky prison play is diverting, unnerving, starkly designed and gorgeously acted. It can also be a little overstated. Im not sure if the text itself hits our social conscience quite as hard as it wants to, but I applaud efforts to usher such stories of the marginalized and institutionally disappeared before our citys more affluent audiences.
