Room For Squares

Rating: NNNN

John Mayer capably straddles the funk and folk camps on his major-label debut. With lovely acoustic rock tunes that draw on the jazzy flavour of the album’s namesake (Hank Mobley’s No Room For Squares), Room For Squares perfectly captures that weird 20-something state that occurs after the frat boy keggers and cultural theory pretentiousness of university end and before the reality of the 9-to-5 grind sinks in. Mayer’s lyrical musings are poignantly poetic, though they might be a bit wide-eyed for some tastes.
