by Guillermo Calderon (Theatre Smash/Arc Production/Canadian Stage). Two couples meet for dinner to take their minds off the war around them. Previews from Mar 28, opens Mar 30 and runs to Apr 16, Tue-Thu & Sat 8 pm, Fri 7 pm, mat Wed, Sat-Sun 1 pm. $39-$69.
The play-within-a-play structure of this avant-garde drama about the ongoing civil war in Syria is complex: a group of actors perform a mysterious but ostensibly comical script uploaded to the internet from Syria, then break character to conduct a Skype interview with a person they believe to be the author. This conversation radically alters their understanding of the show and, newly inspired, they attempt it again. The meta-drama offers a unique vantage point on the war, and mirrors an important and still partial coming-to-public-consciousness of this humanitarian crisis.
