Kon-nichi-wa

KON-NICHI-WA 31 Baldwin, at Henry, 416-593-8538, konnichiwa.ca. Rating: NN

Even though this charming Japanese sushi shack in sleepy Baldwin Village was the first to introduce Hogtown to the wonders of ramen back in the 90s – and has the Tampopo poster to prove it – noodles come second to cheap ‘n’ cheerful lunchtime maki. Frozen prefab mein in one-dimensional broth finished with Sunday-roast pork and half a hard-boiled egg only make one long for the real deal.

Complete dinners for $20 per person (lunches $15), including tax, tip and green tea. Average main $10.

Open Monday to Saturday for lunch 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, dinner 5 to 9:30 pm. Closed Sunday, holidays. Unlicensed. Access: two short steps at door, washroom on same floor.
