KORN

KORN Untouchables (Epic/Sony) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Three years after their Issues disc, nu-metal innovators KoRn’s Untouchables uses a 24-bit sampling rate (that’s twice what’s normally used for recording) and cost a rumoured $3.5 million to make. So what do we get for it? The signature tuned-down bass foundation remains intact, as do the solid beats. Much of this is just more of the same boring noise — although, to KoRn’s credit, they were one of the first bands making this kind of noise. The 80s influence is stronger than ever, with singer Jonathan Davis taking it as far as he can, sounding almost like Marc Almond on Hollow Life and verging on Duran Duran melodic territory with Hating before moving back in to the usual grinding guitars, samples and effects. A slew of incredibly crispy, well produced tunes that may alternately delight and disgust fans.
