by Giacomo Puccini (Against the Grain Theatre). The love story opera is set in a modern-day Toronto dive bar and sung in English. Opens May 19 and runs to Jun 2, May 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31 and Jun 2 at 8 pm. $35.
Joel Ivanys remount of the production that first put Against the Grain on the map as a fresh and accessible opera company will please aficionados and entertain newcomers. His Boheme, set in the high-rent Annex and featuring an amusing English libretto, is intimate, novel and most importantly respectful of the original. The bohemian characters are believably young and ambitious (you cant get away with subpar singing or passionless acting in this space), with Kimy Mc Laren and Andrew Love as standouts.
