Last Dance at Brunswick House

Popular and historic Annex watering hole the Brunswick House (481 Bloor West) is gearing up for its “funeral” and final party on Thursday (March 31).

Since announcing in November that the 140-year old bar would shutter at the end of this month to make way for a family restaurant, owner Abbis Mahmoud has been counting down the days to its farewell events. At 4 pm on Thursday, jazz and blues musicians and former patrons will gather for a wake. The New Orleans-style Magnolia Brass Band will lead a parade from “the Brunny” to the Tranzac (292 Brunswick).

“This is a very sad moment for Toronto and the neighbourhood,” says bassist Chris Daniels of the Climax Jazz Band. “Climax’s first gig was in Albert’s Hall, upstairs at the Brunswick six nights a week from May 1971 to September 1974. There was always a warm welcome, with pickle eating and wet T-shirt contests downstairs and good traditional jazz upstairs.”

Later on Thursday evening, Brunswick House’s The Last Dance takes place at 8 pm. Details are scant – “special guests and live music entertainment” – but it’s a safe bet that many in attendance won’t remember anyway. Tickets are $15, advance $10, via wantickets.com.
