there’s something mesmerizingabout Angela Leach’s hard-edged abstract canvases.

Bursting onto the local scene in the mid-90s, Leach’s trippy Op Art compositions gained the accomplished painter early entree to high-profile gigs at the Art Gallery of Ontario and Power Plant. But it’s the way her carefully contrived waves of colour bulge off their flat painted surfaces, making dry colour theory dance to life, that has entrenched Leach on the scene as a hardcore painter’s painter.

Leach, who limits her palette to 32 colours, holds down a day job as a custom weaver, and it’s clear that her background in textiles (she studied textiles at Sheridan before moving on to fine arts at OCAD) has enriched her artistic output.

It’s all in the way one band of colour works off another.
