by Harry Somers (Canadian Opera Company). Sung in English, French, Michif and Cree (with English surtitles), this opera tells the story of the Metis leader and Canadas westward expansion. Opens Apr 20 and run to May 13: Apr 20, 26, May 2, 9 and 13 at 7:30 pm, Apr 23 at 2 pm, Apr 29 at 4:30 pm. $35-$350.
The COCs revival of Somerss 1967 opera about the charismatic Metis leader and Canadas westward expansion is the best production one could hope for. Russell Braun gives a thrilling central performance, and to represent the First Nations people omitted from the original work, director Peter Hinton has employed two choruses, one composed of Metis and First Nations performers who interact with events on the ground. His direction, and the committed cast and conductor, lend the opera a cohesiveness and sense of purpose it would otherwise lack.
