It’s true, Luna are calling it quits, but at least they’re going out with a bang: Rendezvous is Luna’s best album since 96’s Penthouse. They beef up their dreamy haze of shimmery guitars and loping rhythms with fuzzy effects pedals, synth bloops and even a brief slide-guitar faux-country foray. Dean Wareham’s still really only capable of speak-singing a single melody throughout, but the arrangements give the tracks wildly different vibes, and his bizarro imagistic lyrics, which reference everything from Robespierre and barbecue to doing blow on a French train with Stephen Sprouse, are top-notch.
Luna say farewell at Lee’s Palace November 7.
